Digital handheld refractometers are generally more precise than traditional handheld refractometers.

Instruments are available with multiple scales or the ability to input a special scale using known conversion information.

These instruments operate on the same general critical angle principle as a traditional handheld refractometer and are IP65 (IP Code) water-resistant, and thus washable under a running tap, the difference is that light from an LED light source is focused on the underside or a prism element. This means that the instruments may be used where natural daylight is poor or absent.

Atago have developed the renowned PAL series and the slightly more refined Pallette series instruments which have the widest range of calibation options of any manufacturer, offering units of measure for your application.

Maintenance

• After measuring, use a lint-free tissue to wipe the sample off of the prism surface. If the sample contains oils or fat, use isopropyl alcohol and water to clean the prism surface.

• When not in use, keep the PAL unit in the storage case at room temperature (20°C). Avoid storing the unit in direct sunlight or in a moist environment and do not subject the unit to strong shocks or vibrations. The ambient temperature at which you can safely store the units is between 0 and 40°C.
